On possibly the hottest day of the year so far Bures welcomed a young looking Olicanians side, our regular fixture with the Yorkshire club on their annual tour. In view of the temperature, Bures had hoped to bat first but unfortunately the toss went against us and the Olicanians chose to bat. A second rare and welcome appearance from Joe Smith, who together with Patrick, opened the bowling and, as ever, got Bures off to a good start and at one stage it looked as if Bures may have bowled them out quite cheaply. However, a strong stand from the Yorkshire teams mid-order changed all that and there was then a chance that they may have run away with it. In the end the Cracey father and son duo were brought on and they restricted the last 10 overs to just 60 runs with 3 wickets between them. A total of 146 for the Oli’s then looked well within the capabilities of the mighty Bures team. As ever, the Bures batting can be extremely vulnerable, so it would need at least a couple of good innings to seal the victory. As it turned out Cracey got a first baller but Charlie Erith and Jack Crace each scoring 57, took Bures to the brink. Rupert and Carl finished it off with some lusty blows. A highly satisfying victory and one that not many expected at the start of the day. Needless to say, after a cooling off for both teams in the river, the Bures win was celebrated at length in the “Horseshoes” afterwards. It was also great to have the support of two of our Vice Presidents, Chris Chambers and Mark Maley, with Mark also enjoying a stint as umpire.
