Bures Ilkley Cricket Tour 2006

The now-customary cricket tour to Ilkley took place over the weekend of 1st & 2nd July. To apply the term "tour" to the proceedings might this year be inappropriate since just one game of cricket was played, our regular Sunday fixture against Olicanians taking place as usual but with the unfortunate cancellation of the planned Saturday game against St. Georges.

The Crescent Hotel in Ilkley once again provided the base for us, providing reasonable beer from Black Sheep and Timothy Taylor's, but also sadly some poisonous old slop from various chemical works across the country whose wares were strangely much appreciated by the younger tourists. As ever, the undistinguished curry houses were frequented, provoking wry smiles from the older members at the cross-cultural significance of the term "Indian Cuisine". As ever, our hosts at Olicanian CC provided genial opposition in the one game which was played in the lovely setting of Ilkley. Sadly, a makeshift Bures CC XI was dismissed by Olicanians for a hopelessly inadequate 145, a target which was overhauled with embarrassing ease after an early (excellent) tea. Olicanian CC is clearly one which is forward-looking and ambitious and it is becoming more difficult to beat them, or even make a match of it! Great bunch of guys, though!

Bures retreated to lick wounds in the late-afternoon sunshine in customary fashion, and to reflect on another tour. A clash with football World Cup had an effect on tourist numbers but a great time was had anyway.
