Bures & District Cricket Club

Tour to Menorca - September 2011

Report by Lewis Chambers

A party of 16 players, officials and supporters embarked for Menorca in the first week of September, for two fixtures against the Menorca Cricket Club (MCC). The excellent MCC pavilion has been refurbished and extended since our last visit in 2009 but sadly, the Saturday match against MCC first XI was rain affected following a severe downpour. The captains however agreed to play a match reduced to 20 overs per innings.

Batting first in difficult conditions, the Bures opening pair, James Lee and Lewis Chambers struggled, both perishing to the MCC opening bowlers with the score only 20. Replacements Steve Thornton and Chris Ayers quickly settled however, punishing the MCC bowling and lifting the score to 124 after 16 overs. Some hard hitting by Simon Ayers in a frantic four final overs pushed the closing score to a most respectable 153 runs. In reply Bures opening bowlers Ollie Bocking and Patrick McKenna limited the MCC to only 31 runs from 8 overs for the loss of two wickets. Change bowlers Chris Chambers and Colin Bocking made further progress claiming 5 wickets, the MCC innings concluding on 116 for 7 and representing a comfortable victory for Bures by 37 runs. The clouds cleared and warm evening sunshine greeted the close of play, complimenting the generous post-match refreshments.

For the Sunday 40 over match, the weather was much improved and with the temperature around 85°F, the Bures players were relieved that skipper McKenna won the toss and elected to bat. Opening batsmen James Lee and Lewis Chambers made a good start, matching each other shot for shot and seeing off the MCC attack. This partnership ended with the score on 105 with Chambers retiring on 50 not out. Lee continued until caught at gulley for a fine 89. Steve Thornton and Ollie Bocking progressed the score to 180 and the innings closed on 226 for 8, with father and son ‘Mitch’ and Toby Mitchell at the crease, Toby undefeated despite his father’s best efforts to run him out! After tea in the shade, Bures opening bowlers Chris Chambers and Colin Bocking began well. The first wicket was claimed by Bocking, beating MCC opener Nuttall for pace. Bures continued making progress with a further two wickets each for Ollie Bocking and Mitch Mitchell and three wickets for Patrick McKenna. MCC were eventually bowled out in 38 overs for 159 runs; another fine victory for Bures and thanks in no small part to a brace of excellent catches from Toby Mitchell (who is clearly showing Dad how it should be done!).

Over post-match G&Ts, Hugh Thornton, Club President, thanked the MCC for their hospitality and presented a pen and ink drawing of the Bures pavilion as a gesture of gratitude. The team then retired to the comfort of the excellent S’Algar Hotel toasting their successes with the local Mahon gin. An excellent weekend's cricket was much enjoyed by all, with a number of tourists staying on past the weekend to enjoy a holiday on this Mediterranean island. It is hoped to tour Menorca again in 2013.
