On a gloomy Friday evening winning the toss was always going to be crucial, and Captain Carl successfully achieved that.
Stu P and Rob W then duly set out to get us off to a good start, which they did, albeit largely down to the bat of Stu. However, once he was out for a meagre 41, in fact the first time he had failed to make 50 for Bures, the baton was handed to Will M, who made a stylish 28, followed by contributions from most of the team thereafter.
At one stage we had looked like scoring 150 or more, but in the end we only reached 127, and it was more a case of keeping them bowling while the light was fading, so that it was pretty poor by the time West Bergholt started their innings.
Captain Carl skilfully manoeuvred his bowlers, and initially managed to check their run chase effectively, with Carl taking 2 wickets fairly early on. However, there followed some stout resistance and plenty of boundaries, and suddenly they were well ahead of the rate, looking confident and odds on to win.
Fortunately, the light had continued to deteriorate making batting (and indeed fielding) a lot harder. An inspired bowling change to bring on debutante Harry A produced a wicket first ball. A cunning long hop smacked to deep square leg was initially only parried by Will M, but he dived to collect the rebound, and a vital break through was made.
The excitement levels grew to fever pitch, and the vast crowd (notably Mark B) became more and more vocal. The bowling remained tight enough so that they needed 10 off the last (8 ball) over. Cometh the hour etc. Stu P, once again to the forefront, held his nerve, and in almost pitch black conditions took 3 wickets, and prevented Joe Smith hitting a winning 6 off the last ball, thereby creating a great victory for the mighty Bures.
