Bures C.C. v Twinstead C.C.

vs

Bures Cricket Club won by 58 runs

Recap

BURES CC v Twinstead CC (home)
Henceforth known as “The Colonels Match”

Still smarting from a rare defeat to Twinstead last year, we were keen to bat first this year. Charlie E came up with the brilliant strategy of arriving late, so we delegated Magic Ralph to do the toss and so for the first time in recent memory we won. Luckily Ralph remembered the instructions and thus Bures duly went into bat.

Magic Ralph and the Colonel (Giles H) opened the batting and the rest of us were treated to a wonderful afternoon of watching, for the most part. Giles thrashed the ball to all corners of theground, and the only danger he ever looked in, was when Twinstead tried to insist on retiring him once he reached 50.  After a slightly sharp exchange, Giles returned to the crease and proceeded to score a further 90 runs, finally being caught on a magnificent 142. Ralph and others played supporting roles well, with Matt J once again scoring useful runs (26) and Rupert T and Captain Charlie reaching 20 n.o. and 29 n.o. respectively. So, at the end of the innings Bures had amassed an excellent 248 for 4.

Twinstead approached the run chase with gusto and for a while it looked like they might make us sweat. Toby H made the first breakthrough reasonably early on, but the score was past 100 before the captain turned to the Colonel, who immediately put Bures back in control by breaking the key partnership. The Chairman then proceeded to get their danger man out with a cunning leg side half volley, which was well caught in the deep.

Magic Ralph sadly was not as good form as last match so the debutant Chris G(&)T was brought on. Despite not having bowled for years, he immediately showed us all how easy it is, by taking a “Michelle” and ending up with figures of 5 overs, 5 for 32 – a great bowling display.

Mentions should also go to Ed Alexander, who bowled beautifully and took a good caught and bowled, and also Paul H who, not to be outdone by Toby, finished proceedings with a wide double bouncer, spooned up to cover.

Sadly, most had to rush off to a party, so it was left to the Chairman, Mark B and Magic Ralph to celebrate another great victory for the Mighty Bures, and our 3 rd win out of 4.
